Background and Experience
Tim has served as the Director of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity in the UK which supports the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe. He developed a strategy for a five-fold increase in income, re-organising the fundraising team to emphasize major giving, legacy marketing and stewardship while improving the efficacy of community fundraising programs, the annual fund, and the Charity’s communications with 20,000 supporters. Tim restructured the Charity by increasing FTEs by 20 percent while reducing the annual expenditure budget by five percent. Importantly, he established a culture of philanthropy within The Royal Marsden, one of the top four oncology research hospital in the world, and strategically aligned fundraising activity with the needs of the hospital.
Tim also served at Durham University (ranked third in the UK) as Special Representative to the Vice-Chancellor, Director of the Office of Principal Gifts, and Director of Development and Alumni Relations. He was responsible for restructuring the University’s development and alumni relations programme which led to a 65 percent increase in annual fundraising and a 400 percent increase in new donors. While at Durham, Tim developed expertise in Middle East fundraising, securing substantial endowment gifts and annual contributions from Durham’s Arab alumni and friends.
Tim achieved considerable success in the US as Assistant Dean of Development and External Relations at The University of Utah’s College of Humanities. He delivered a 15-fold increase in donor funds to the College, enrolled 3,000 new donors, and raised US$16.5 million towards a new Humanities building. As well as being instrumental in planning a US$1 billion campaign.
Earlier in his career, Tim served as Senior Director of Marketing for the Children’s Miracle Network, a cause-related marketing organisation that raises in excess of US$200 million for children’s hospitals in the US and Canada.
A former Fulbright scholar, Tim has also held positions with the US Institute of Peace (research associate), the consultancy Fund Development Associates (founder and president), the philanthropic holding American Happenings (president), and the US Army (Arabic linguist).
