Tax Exemption Ruling Finalised – Finallymyles-mcgregor-lowndes102x125

by Professor Myles McGregor-Lowndes | ProBono Australia
The Australian Tax Office has issued a final ruling on two new conditions for Not for Profit organisations to meet for continued tax exemption. Professor Myles McGregor-Lowndes from Queensland’s Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies at QUT explains.

Daniel’s Comments:

Fundraisers have an important role in reminding organisations to be true to the purposes established in their governing documents, and to ensure that expenditure is directed towards their purposes as set out in those documents. Professor McGregor-Lowndes’s coverage of this ATO ruling is a warning light against “mission drift” in which organisations move away over time from their stated purpose to some other purpose. Perhaps the most common drift is from direct service to those in need to advocacy. It is helpful that the ATO provides this ruling. It is up to the sector to heed it.
