TechSoup Canada links to several excellent resources that describe in details the opportunities of crowdfunding, and how to run a crowdfunding campaign. I was interested to learn that less than 12% of crowdfunding programs in Canada have a goal more than $20,000.
It is great to see some Australian crowdfunding exercises being successful in fields as diverse as charities, new business ventures, short films, music recordings, and medical research. We have even seen a master’s thesis on the topic. It is equally important that we understand the crowdfunding experiences that don’t go well – or which eventually reach their target exhausting all involved and their Outlook contacts.
Of course, don’t ask if it’s legal. Like most internet fundraising it is probably impossible for your legal advisers to assure you that you have the appropriate permissions to raise funds in the jurisdictions in which your internet promotion will appear. And can you be sure that your incentives don’t constitute “material benefit” putting tax deductibility at risk? Perhaps best not to know.
